Sikkim Buddhist Sites

Pemayangtse Monastery
Pemayangtse Monastery is one of the oldest and famous monasteries of Sikkim, situated at a height of 6,841 feet and 110 km from Gangtok and offers panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges. The monastery is a three storied building fitted with wall paintings, sculptures and antiques. There is a seven tiered painted wooden model of the abode of Guru Rimpoche on the third floor, built single handely by late Dugzin Rimpoche in duration of five years. There are many celebrations which take place in the monastery every year.
Enchey Monastery
Located near Gangtok and enveloped by tall pine trees, the Enchey monastery is a two storey building boasting of shells which are regarded auspicious Buddhist symbols and murals representing the protective deity and wheel of law on the porch. The literal meaning of ‘Enchey Monastery’ is ‘the solitary temple’. The striking monastery is home to 90 monks. The three Gods worshipped in the monastery are Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava and Loki Sharia. January is the time for the colourful and vibrant “Chaam” or masked dance held at the Monastery.
Rumtek Monastery
Located 23 km from Gangtok, originally it was called as the Dharma Chakra Centre and also a most popular part of Sikkim Buddhist Sites. Rumtek monastery is considered as a shrine for Tibetan Buddhist, it appears very serene in the beautiful background of majestic hills and beautiful waterfalls. The remarkable Rumtek monastery has preserved a golden stupa and various other sculptures which belonged to the 16th Karmapa. Besides the Golden Stupa, the monastery is also home to various unique artefacts. There is a prayer hall inside the monastery which is worth seeing, it is decorated with splendid murals, statues and ‘tangkhas’.
